CJ Evolution Podcast: Deon Joseph - Inspirational Speaker, Homeless Advocate and Police Officer

Hello everyone and welcome back to the show. Special thanks to all the brave men and women who work in the criminal justice field. Keep up the great work and you have much support. We continue to grow because of you the listener and supporter. Please rate and review the show on iTunes – Give us that 5 Star rating. Mobile threat detection is here. Detectachem is doing their part to protect our brave men and women in the military and in law enforcement. Check out how his great company can help your organization. Head over to www.cjevolution.com and click the Detectachem link. In this episode Patrick welcome Officer Deon Joseph. Officer Joseph is a law enforcement consultant who has worked for the LAPD for over 24 years, twenty-two of those years in downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row community. From patrolling the streets or providing a shoulder for the community to lean on to meeting with public figures and advocating for change, Deon is driven to create an environment conducive to change for the homeless and those trying to reclaim their lives from the grip of addiction. He is an honest, faithful, passionate and caring man – traits he pours into his daily life and activities. For the past ten years, Deon has served as Senior Lead Officer in charge of safety of the people that live on Skid Row. Deon was able to help change the culture of Skid Row along with his fellow officers, via a grassroots approach as opposed to handcuffs. Over time, Deon discovered that he could not simply make arrests with any hopes of making lasting changes on Skid Row. Coupled with reducing crime in Skid Row, Deon helped build a better relationship between the LAPD and the homeless population they serve.  Deon is considered a subject matter expert on Skid Row crime and culture and has been sought out by multiple news organizations, filmmakers, and politicians to speak on issues related to Skid Row.  To accomplish changes to the culture of Skid Row, Deon collaborated with the community to develop programs such as the “Just Like U” Mentor program, which began in 2006 at the Union Rescue Mission.  The program was designed to motivate kids living in poverty to see themselves beyond their negative circumstance by placing mentors in front of them who have become successful, but whose lives mirrored the lives of the children.   In 2008, Deon created an education safety and self-defense seminar focused on the women of Skid Row called “Ladies Night.”  The goal of this program was to ensure that the women of Skid Row understood that no matter their race, criminal background or socioeconomic status, they had a fundamental right to report domestic violence and sexual abuse committed against them, and they would not be penalized for doing so.  In 2009, Deon began an outreach program with seven other officers that included passing out hygiene kits, as well as drug, housing, and job program information to the homeless to guide them away from the streets and into area programs. Working with housing programs within and outside of Skid Row, Deon was able to help house over 100 homeless people over eight years who were truly ready to take a chance and change their lives for the better. Deon along with his fellow officers were responsible for a 40% reduction in overall crime in Skid Row, and a 32% reduction in death from 2005 to 2009. Deon, with the help of the Skid Row community, has aggressively focused crime-fighting efforts on drug dealers who are not homeless and come down to Skid Row to sell drugs and alcohol inside and outside of the drug programs. Deon goes beyond policing the community of Skid Row, he has become a part of it, establishing relationships with a community that most believed would be impossible to do. Deon is proud to be able to show love to the people of Skid Row from an unexpected place. “I just want to be a strong voice in ending homelessness, saving women from being victimized and changing the negative culture and perception of police in t

In this episode Patrick welcomes Purdeep Sangha Purdeep is an authority on performance psychology, mindfulness, leadership, and business growth. He is also a leader in the science and art of Self-Mastery.  His inspiration for The Male Entrepreneur was his father, who ironically passed away shortly before seeing Purdeep’s vision come true. His father was an entrepreneur who had immigrated here from India with $11 in his pocket. He worked a minimum wage labor job for many years before starting his own business. Purdeep learned many lessons from his father. Positive attributes such as: values, being strong as a man, masculinity, and never giving up. But he also learned the challenges that came along with being a struggling entrepreneur: the feelings of guilt, not being good enough, and addictions. Seeing his father struggle and having struggled himself, Purdeep’s motivation is to ensure that other male entrepreneurs have the knowledge, tools and skills to create a more profitable business and fulfilling life for them and their family. He grew up in small town in British Columbia, Canada. He started working on an orchard at the age of 9 and at 16, he was managing over 50 people. He still considers himself to be an orchard boy as his family still has an orchard growing apples and cherries. Throughout his years, Purdeep was committed to studying successful businesses and was determined to find out what made one entrepreneur more successful over another. He spent thousands of hours studying the best businesses around the world and also attended four of the top business schools in North America such as MIT, Stanford, Ivey and Schulich. Prior to starting his own business, Purdeep was a successful executive at a multi-billion-dollar organization and led various divisions and initiatives such as Marketing, Sales, Customer Experience, Operations, Project Management, and Innovation.  Now, Purdeep dedicates his time to helping other entrepreneurs and spending time with his family.  He also loves to podcast, workout, learn new things, and spend time in nature with animals. CJ Evolution Podcast: Ray Vann, Police Chaplain and Author of Killing: A Spiritual Discernment Guide for Law Enforcement.

Hello everyone and welcome back to the #1 Criminal Justice Podcast on the Web. We continue to grow because of you the listener and supporter. Please rate and review the podcast on iTunes, and become a Patron of the show through Patreon. You can find both links on www.cjevolution.com In this great episode, Patrick welcomes Ray Vann. Ray wears many different hats...and they often don't match! You see, as a permanent deacon in the Catholic Church, he is ordained to serve the Church as he lives among the world. This means that unlike other Catholic clergymen permanent deacons are usually married with families and work in the world to support their families. Most of them are not paid by the Church. In the reality and rawness of life, they are called to bring the Church to the world. As such, they must accomplish this mission. You will see Ray offer spiritual insight, but you will also see him promote his businesses and his ministry. Don't be shocked if Ray, a Catholic clergyman, is discussing firearms and the rights guaranteed by our Constitution. Don't be shocked if he doesn’t sugar coat his comments. Jesus often got straight to the point and didn't bother with any form of political correctness. Ray always tries to follow His path of compassion and forgiveness, but also believe in His message of justice. Although this book, Killing: A Spiritual Discernment Guide for Law Enforcement, is written primarily for law enforcement officers, most of what is written is also of significant importance for any citizen who is regularly armed with any type of deadly weapon for the purposes of self-defense and/or defense of others. The topic of this book is a spiritual discernment on killing. More specifically, it highlights the importance of being prepared and working through the spiritual aspects or belief system issues associated with the possibility of having to end the life of another human being. In addition, this writing will assist law enforcement officers in developing a plan of action to be implemented immediately after an incident where deadly force is used. You can find Ray here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ray-vann-ma-2b4049153/ Find Ray's book here: https://www.amazon.com/Killing-Spiritual-Discernment-Guide-Enforcement-ebook/dp/B07MCR4ZRC/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=ray+vann&qid=1553559430&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spell Stay tuned for more great guests on the CJEvolution Podcast.   www.cjevolution.com   Patrick

Ryan is a police officer in a large municipal agency in Arizona. His financial journey began when he and his wife saved up a sum of money and he didn’t know who he could trust to invest it.  After several interviews with financial advisers, he still didn’t feel like he could trust anyone.  Due to this, Ryan began his journey to educate himself by reading every finance book he could get my hands on and by attending financial seminars. After getting a good handle on debt, finance, and investments, he decided to start this blog as a resource for others who find it difficult to trust people with their money. Having been in law enforcement for 14 years, he has seen the devastation left behind by people who mismanage their finances. This also motivates Ryan to educate as many people as he can, both in and outside of law enforcement. Ryan obtained a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Administration Degree from Northern Arizona University. He is an adjunct professor at a local community college, and he has been a student of finance for many years. His blog is dedicated to those looking to eliminate their debt and to mold a new way of thinking, living, and spending. CJ Evolution Podcast: Former prosecutor, Speaker, and Law Enforcement Trainer - Val Van Brocklin

Hello everyone and welcome back to the show. Special thanks to all the brave men and women who work in the criminal justice field. Thank you. You all are doing a great job. Do you love coffee? You will love the coffee from Four Sigmatic. Check the link out at www.cjevolution.com In this episode, Patrick welcomes Val Van Brocklin. For over 30 years Val has been winning hearts, inspiring action and helping people find greater meaning in the work they do.  She got here through a unique combination of skills, education, and “in the trenches” experience — all fueled by her own passion for people who have chosen to serve others. Val had a teaching career before she earned her law degree at the University of Virginia and stalked high adventure in Alaska – joining the Anchorage District Attorney’s Office. She quickly became a senior trial attorney. Because of her notable work, Val was asked to join the state’s Office of Special Prosecution & Appeals where she had state-wide responsibility for cases that were so complex, they required specialized investigative and prosecution efforts. Val’s endeavors again caught attention. She was recruited by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to prosecute complex white-collar crime, for which she received the FBI’s commendation. As a state and federal prosecutor for over 10 years, Val’s trial work sparked not only ample, local media coverage but was also featured nationally on: ABC’S PRIME TIME LIVE Discovery Channel’s Justice Files And in USA Today, The National Enquirer, and REDBOOK. Throughout her career as a prosecutor, Val’s dynamic presentation style made her a frequently invited speaker for law enforcement and other professional and community groups. It also left her fielding many more speaking requests than she could possibly meet — prosecuting criminals is a full-time job.  And so, another adventure presented itself. Described by Calibre Press as “the indisputable master of entertainment,” Val is now an internationally sought keynote speaker, trainer, and author. Her training programs can be seen on the Law Enforcement Television Network, one of which won a prestigious 2000 Telly Award that honors outstanding cable television and the finest video and film productions. Her Public Radio commentaries and stories include a 2005 national award winner.
