Morreale is Chair and Full Professor of Criminal Justice at Worcester State University. Since 2002, he has been a Contributing Faculty Member and Doctoral Mentor with the School of Public Policy and Administration at Walden University, teaching public management and criminal justice courses and supervising doctoral dissertations. Dr. Morreale served in law enforcement for 30 years, retiring as Assistant Special Agent in Charge for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Investigations, Inspector General. For 20 years, he served with the Drug Enforcement Administration, serving as a special agent and managing agent in enforcement groups, and as Chief of the Asset Forfeiture and Financial Investigations Section in New England. He served with the Dover, New Hampshire Police Department, and the U.S. Army Military Police Corps, as an M.P. and Military Police Investigator in the U.S. and Europe, during the Viet Nam era. Are you worried about money and how you are going to pay the bills? Or, are you focused on the positive in your life? Are you grateful?  When you start your day off in the negative, there is a pretty good chance you are going to remain in that mindset for the duration of the day #mindset.  We have all stubbed our toe(s) at one point or another right? Did that experience send you in a tail spin for the rest of the day? I know it has for me in the past. But, you don't have to stay in that mindset. You have the power.  Remember YOU control your thoughts. Your mind is a garden. What you PLANT in your mind will grow. Before you get out of bed I want you to start thinking about the positive in your life. I want you to be grateful. Brock Bevell is living proof that anyone, including YOU, can overcome every obstacle life throws at you. Brock is a husband and father of 7 Children. He is a recovery coach and an advocate for those struggling with addiction. Brock has over 11 years of sobriety and 6.5 years working 1 on 1 with men and women who struggle with addiction. In 2001, while working as a Police Officer, Brock was involved in an accident where a mom was prostituting her daughter out for sex in exchange for drugs. During the incident, Brock was run over and sustained notable injuries to his ankle and knee. The injuries and surgeries from the accident led Brock on an extensive addiction to opioids. He openly shares his point of view of the life of an undercover cop, who dedicated his life to the often dangerous and clandestine world of informants, drug dealers, and addicts. While working as a police officer he shares his perception of those who suffer from addiction and alcoholism. On the flip side, Brock didn’t intend to become a drug addict, but nonetheless found himself in a knock down drag out battle with opioid addiction, even turning to selling narcotics to feed his growing and out of control addiction. The kicker you ask? The addict turned dealer and the thrill-seeking undercover cop is the same person – and that’s just the start of what is genuinely an incredible story of a man who at one point has to make the ultimate split-second decision as a police officer, finds himself growing to hate the addicts and dealers he is chasing, and ultimately becomes one himself. As you know, I wrote a book called EVOLVE in 2019, and it's now more than ever applicable to me. It needs to be for you too. As you hear this show, I want you to FEEL and BELIEVE that your life is amazing and anything is possible for you. 1) E - Elevate your mind. Everything starts with the correct mindset. Learn how to cultivate gratitude and start every day in gratitude.  2) V - Visualize. This is so important to your personal and professional success. Any successful athlete, CEO, Law Enforcement Officer (list goes on) has visualized there success before it happened. 3) O - Others. Who are you surrounding yourself with. THIS IS CRITICAL to your personal and professional success.  4) L - Love yourself. Look, if you don't love yourself and who you are with all of your weaknesses and strengths, how are you going to LOVE anyone else? 5) V - Victories. Live in the moment. Celebrate your victories, because you have many of them. Your alive right? Go from there. 6) E - Everyday be your best. Yes, the job can get to you. I know, I have been there. Imagine you are in this country to protect American interests and assets. Lastly, imagine all hell breaks loose one day and you are under attack. It was an honor to have Mark “Oz” Geist on the show. Mark "Oz" Geist is a member of the Annex Security Team that fought the Battle of Benghazi, Libya, from September 11 to September 12, 2012. A Colorado native, Mr. Geist joined the United States Marine Corps in 1984. During his time in the service, he served in Barracks Duty in the Philippines, then with the 2nd Battalion 9th Marines Golf Company, as well as the Surveillance and Target Acquisition Platoon. He then was chosen to serve in the newly formed Marine Cadre program as an Anti-/Counter- Terrorism Instructor. Upon the completion of a very successful tour and re-enlistment, Mr. Geist changed his military occupational specialty to the Intelligence field, specializing in Interrogation Translation. He attended language school where he studied Persian Farsi. After serving 12 years in the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Geist became a Deputy Sheriff in Teller County, Colorado. In that role, he was assigned as liaison with the Vice Narcotics and Intelligence Unit in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as well as an Investigator for Crimes against Children. Certified as a Forensic Interviewer of children, he investigated numerous case of abuse in which he helped to secure convictions of the perpetrators. He then took a job as Chief of Police in Fowler, Colorado. After leaving the Fowler Police Department, Mr. Geist began his own business in private investigations as well as bounty hunting and bail bonds. In 2004, Mr. Geist began doing contract security work in Iraq. He worked for Triple Canopy, providing Personal Security Details for Department of State personnel in Baquba, Iraq. Upon the completion of that contract he worked for USIS, the United States Investigative Services, training Iraqi SWAT teams and Personal Security Details. He also served as a mentor/advisor to the Personal Security Detail of Dr. Ayad Allawi, the former Prime Minister of Iraq. Mr. Geist finished his career as a security contractor in Benghazi, Libya, where he was credited with helping to save the lives of more than 25 Americans. Mr. Geist is still recovering from the injuries he sustained in the battle. He is a co-author of the bestselling book "13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi." If you do great, but if you don’t, I recommend you develop one. One that will fit your needs. My morning starts with the following: Gratitude – Before my feet hit the floor in the morning, I am going through a gratitude practice. I start will all the people that are in my life and go from there. This one practice can change your life. The more grateful you are the more of what you want will come into your life. Pray – I pray early in the morning after my gratitude. Meditate – I meditate for at least 10 minutes. There are many apps out there to help you get started. Here is one: https://www.calm.com/ Journal – I write down my daily goals and objectives and other important information that I want to accomplish – I also journal at night to recap the day. Work out – I spend at least 1 to 1.5 hours at the gym. Your body runs it all. You have to take care of your body. When you take care of your body you also take care of your mind. Like anything a morning routine takes time to develop, and it takes dedication. Remember any change in your life is going to take work. When you develop a morning routine / ritual it will soon become habit. Your habits and routines can change your life for the better, of worse. Develop your morning ritual today. What was the event in your life that propelled you forward or made you change? We all have Catalysts in our lives at different points, but most people either don't take advantage of them, or they ignore them. Your life is only going to change if YOU change your life.  Maybe you went through a divorce or separation. Maybe you lost your job or didn't get that promotion you wanted. These examples are tough to go through and I have experienced all of these. Prior to that, he was in the United States Marine Corps. He also attended college. He was deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and 2005. Once he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and earned his bachelor’s degree, Scott entered into law enforcement. Through deployments and time in law enforcement, Scott has done his best to inspire others and be a team player. Scott has helped fellow officers keep marriages together, pull through during hard financial times, overcome depression, and has provided encouragement whenever an officer needed it. Paul is an Assistant Professor at The University of Colorado teaching in The School of Public Affairs and he is also a former Law Enforcement Officer. In this episode, Paul and I talk about a variety of law enforcement topics and Paul’s research focuses on police decision-making, human error and resilience in the context of potential use-of-force encounters with an eye toward improving outcomes. He has over 10 years of practical law enforcement experience, including time as an in-service instructor, field-training officer, patrol sergeant and department training manager. Paul is actively engaged in police research and training across the country and regularly presents to both academic and practitioner audiences. His early research received awards from the American Society of Criminology and the Division of Policing at the American Society of Criminology. Paul works closely with a number of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in a wide range of consulting and training roles. He was talking about having confidence. Confidence is the difference between success and failure. Think about it. If you aren't confident in yourself why would anyone else be confident in you? You have to stop putting yourself down. The self-deprecating talk has to stop because it's not only not healthy for you, but it's not leading you anywhere.  Remember you are worthy, you are deserving and you can be the best person YOU want to be. You just have to have MORE CONFIDENCE.  Here are a few take-aways you can do right now: 1) Write down a favorite confidence quote and put it somewhere you can see it throughout the day 2) Find a picture of yourself when you were feeling confident. Maybe it was graduation from the academy. Maybe it was your wedding day. It can be any picture where you felt great and confident about the future. Put it somewhere you will see it all day.  You see it's not only important to see this quote and to see this picture, it's also very important that YOU FEEL the feeling of being confident.  Be more confident and change your life - for the better.
