As you know, I wrote a book called EVOLVE in 2019, and it's now more than ever applicable to me. It needs to be for you too. As you hear this show, I want you to FEEL and BELIEVE that your life is amazing and anything is possible for you. 1) E - Elevate your mind. Everything starts with the correct mindset. Learn how to cultivate gratitude and start every day in gratitude.  2) V - Visualize. This is so important to your personal and professional success. Any successful athlete, CEO, Law Enforcement Officer (list goes on) has visualized there success before it happened. 3) O - Others. Who are you surrounding yourself with. THIS IS CRITICAL to your personal and professional success.  4) L - Love yourself. Look, if you don't love yourself and who you are with all of your weaknesses and strengths, how are you going to LOVE anyone else? 5) V - Victories. Live in the moment. Celebrate your victories, because you have many of them. Your alive right? Go from there. 6) E - Everyday be your best. Yes, the job can get to you. I know, I have been there. Imagine you are in this country to protect American interests and assets. Lastly, imagine all hell breaks loose one day and you are under attack. It was an honor to have Mark “Oz” Geist on the show. Mark "Oz" Geist is a member of the Annex Security Team that fought the Battle of Benghazi, Libya, from September 11 to September 12, 2012. A Colorado native, Mr. Geist joined the United States Marine Corps in 1984. During his time in the service, he served in Barracks Duty in the Philippines, then with the 2nd Battalion 9th Marines Golf Company, as well as the Surveillance and Target Acquisition Platoon. He then was chosen to serve in the newly formed Marine Cadre program as an Anti-/Counter- Terrorism Instructor. Upon the completion of a very successful tour and re-enlistment, Mr. Geist changed his military occupational specialty to the Intelligence field, specializing in Interrogation Translation. He attended language school where he studied Persian Farsi. After serving 12 years in the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Geist became a Deputy Sheriff in Teller County, Colorado. In that role, he was assigned as liaison with the Vice Narcotics and Intelligence Unit in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as well as an Investigator for Crimes against Children. Certified as a Forensic Interviewer of children, he investigated numerous case of abuse in which he helped to secure convictions of the perpetrators. He then took a job as Chief of Police in Fowler, Colorado. After leaving the Fowler Police Department, Mr. Geist began his own business in private investigations as well as bounty hunting and bail bonds. In 2004, Mr. Geist began doing contract security work in Iraq. He worked for Triple Canopy, providing Personal Security Details for Department of State personnel in Baquba, Iraq. Upon the completion of that contract he worked for USIS, the United States Investigative Services, training Iraqi SWAT teams and Personal Security Details. He also served as a mentor/advisor to the Personal Security Detail of Dr. Ayad Allawi, the former Prime Minister of Iraq. Mr. Geist finished his career as a security contractor in Benghazi, Libya, where he was credited with helping to save the lives of more than 25 Americans. Mr. Geist is still recovering from the injuries he sustained in the battle. He is a co-author of the bestselling book "13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi." If you do great, but if you don’t, I recommend you develop one. One that will fit your needs. My morning starts with the following: Gratitude – Before my feet hit the floor in the morning, I am going through a gratitude practice. I start will all the people that are in my life and go from there. This one practice can change your life. The more grateful you are the more of what you want will come into your life. Pray – I pray early in the morning after my gratitude. Meditate – I meditate for at least 10 minutes. There are many apps out there to help you get started. Here is one: https://www.calm.com/ Journal – I write down my daily goals and objectives and other important information that I want to accomplish – I also journal at night to recap the day. Work out – I spend at least 1 to 1.5 hours at the gym. Your body runs it all. You have to take care of your body. When you take care of your body you also take care of your mind. Like anything a morning routine takes time to develop, and it takes dedication. Remember any change in your life is going to take work. When you develop a morning routine / ritual it will soon become habit. Your habits and routines can change your life for the better, of worse. Develop your morning ritual today. Jeffrey is an American man from upstate New York known for having been wrongfully convicted in 1990 at the age of seventeen of raping, beating, and strangling Angela Correa, a 15-year-old high school classmate.   He made a false confession to police, which he withdrew, and his DNA was excluded from that left at the scene. He was nonetheless convicted, based on police testimony that he had confessed. He served sixteen years, although he continued to maintain his innocence and appealed his conviction. He requested post-conviction DNA testing, but the DA's office refused to accept his lay request. After a new DA was elected and Jeffrey gained support by the Innocence Project in 2006 DNA testing was conducted for Jeffrey. It excluded his DNA from the evidence at the crime scene. Significantly, the forensic DNA was found to match that of an inmate already serving time for murder. The latter man confessed to the attack on Correa and was convicted of her death. Jeffrey was exonerated and released in 2006. He has become an advocate for criminal justice reform. In 2014 a jury found in favor of Jeffrey and awarded him $41.6 million in a federal civil suit against the county for wrongful imprisonment. Due to his pretrial settlement with the county, Jeff was limited to receive $10 million. However, the older I get the more I realize the more I try to force something into my life, the more that life pushes me back. I have learned that sometimes I have to go with the current instead of against it. What about you? Are you going with the flow and going against it? I have learned the more I go against the current, the more stress I have in my life. I have learned that whatever happens is going to happen because I can't control a lot of things in my life. What about you? You are exactly in the place you need to be right now. I know that is hard to hear sometimes, but it's the truth. There is a plan for you. It was never designed to be perfect. Mistakes happen, but when an innocent person gets sent to prison based on a crappy criminal investigation and subsequent trial and then gets released years later, we all should demand accountability and answers. My next guest is Jia Wertz. Jia Wertz is an independent documentary filmmaker pursuing stories that explore wrongful convictions in the name of protecting the social order. She is currently investigating the vagaries and inconsistencies of the American Criminal Justice system through the story of Jeffrey Deskovic and other exonerees who have had their freedom restored at the cost of irreparable damage to their minds, relationships and families.Her debut documentary short titled Conviction premiered at the Greenwich International Film Festival and saw success on the festival circuit. The short was selected at numerous festivals including New Filmmakers NY, Cannes International Independent Film Festival, Independent Cinema Showcase, New York Cinematography Awards, Best Shorts Fest, among others, prior to being featured on Amazon Prime. The film is nominated for Best Picture, Best Cinematography, and Best Documentary Film at the Georgia Documentary Film Festival.She is currently in the final stages of post-production on the feature-length documentary of the same story. Jia is from Calgary, Alberta and currently lives in New York City with her husband and son.
