John Marx, CPP, CHM is the Executive Director of the Law Enforcement Survival Institute and author of the book: Armor Your Self™: How To Survive A Career In Law Enforcement. He is Editor in Chief of CopsAlive.com and holds certifications in both service and security management. He was a Police Officer for twenty-three years and served on a SWAT Team as a Hostage Negotiator for nineteen of those years. He is the founder of The Law Enforcement Survival Institute and CopsAlive.com. John worked in law enforcement for over twenty-three years, nineteen of those years as a Hostage Negotiator on his departments SWAT Team. In that time he talked countless people out of committing suicide and helped rescue many others. One case earned him the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. Also during his career in law enforcement he coordinated his city’s customer service initiative for four years under a federal grant. He is a two-time graduate from Disney University. He was a Security Team Supervisor at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta Georgia, and has worked security in a number of settings including providing security for The Beach Boys, Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Ray Charles, Presidential candidate Michael Dukakus and others. Here are some tips I use to get me ready for the week ahead: 1) Make lists of what you want to accomplish during the week - Personal or Professional, hopefully its both. 2) Look at that list throughout the day. Just don't make a list and forget about it. Look at it several times a day. Research shows when we make lists and look at the lists we are more likely to accomplish our goals. 3) Spend time with yourself throughout the week to reflect. Former Air Force fighter pilot with over 2,500 missions providing escort for the President, protecting our nation's borders, and training thousands of pilots for the United States and 25 allied countries around the world. As an F-15 pilot, Thor escorted the U.S. President through the sky and flew missions to ensure the safety of the country after the attacks of 9/11. He was the tactical leader of 300 of the most senior combat pilots in the Air Force and he oversaw the execution of a $150M/year flight program. Thor was named the Top Instructor Pilot at the Air Force Flight Training Headquarters and he’s flown thousands of missions teaching pilots from 25 countries around the world. He received his bachelor’s degree at the United States Air Force Academy and is a summa cum laude graduate of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas. He is Afterburner’s expert leadership speaker, sharing his knowledge with organizations across the US. Thor is humbled to have had the incredible experiences that executive leadership within the military and Afterburner have afforded him, but he’s most proud of the following accomplishments. In 2010, Thor was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and given about a 15% chance to live. Instead of giving up, Thor decided to give back. He started a youth outreach program in San Antonio that has grown to help more than 15,000 at-risk kids. Ray wears many different hats...and they often don't match! You see, as a permanent deacon in the Catholic Church, he is ordained to serve the Church as he lives among the world. This means that unlike other Catholic clergymen permanent deacons are usually married with families and work in the world to support their families. Most of them are not paid by the Church. In the reality and rawness of life, they are called to bring the Church to the world. As such, they must accomplish this mission. You will see Ray offer spiritual insight, but you will also see him promote his businesses and his ministry. Don't be shocked if Ray, a Catholic clergyman, is discussing firearms and the rights guaranteed by our Constitution. Don't be shocked if he doesn’t sugar coat his comments. Jesus often got straight to the point and didn't bother with any form of political correctness. Ray always tries to follow His path of compassion and forgiveness, but also believe in His message of justice. Although this book, Killing: A Spiritual Discernment Guide for Law Enforcement, is written primarily for law enforcement officers, most of what is written is also of significant importance for any citizen who is regularly armed with any type of deadly weapon for the purposes of self-defense and/or defense of others. The topic of this book is a spiritual discernment on killing. More specifically, it highlights the importance of being prepared and working through the spiritual aspects or belief system issues associated with the possibility of having to end the life of another human being. In addition, this writing will assist law enforcement officers in developing a plan of action to be implemented immediately after an incident where deadly force is used. Andrew is the founder of the Mental Toughness Training Center, a leadership consultancy specializing in peak performance, team dynamics, resolving conflict in the workplace and is the author of the book, “Ground Zero Leadership: CEO of You” (2016). He teaches strategies on how to take control of your thoughts, feelings, attitudes, and actions, especially under pressure while sharing his experiences in combat and high-threat environments across the globe. A Marine Corps infantry combat veteran and former federal agent, he holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Theology, is a guest lecturer at Clemson University, and co-hosts the radio call-in show, “Get Warrior Tough.” As a leadership and peak-performance expert working across five continents, Andrew has successfully added tens of millions in profit to his clients’ bottom line, through his trade-mark cellular problem-solving methods before becoming a motivational keynote speaker. Ryan is a police officer in a large municipal agency in Arizona. His financial journey began when he and his wife saved up a sum of money and he didn’t know who he could trust to invest it.  After several interviews with financial advisers, he still didn’t feel like he could trust anyone.  Due to this, Ryan began his journey to educate himself by reading every finance book he could get my hands on and by attending financial seminars. Shield616 was formed with the peace officer on patrol in mind. The goal of this great organization is two-fold. Jake was born in Northern Minnesota.  From his earliest memories, he wanted to be a police officer when he grew up.  Growing up, those desires never changed. After graduating high school in 1998, Jake attended Alexandria Technical College in Minnesota. Alex Tech is known nationally for their Law Enforcement training program. While attending Campus Crusade for Christ, Jake met his wife, Jenna. After graduating with an AAS in Criminal Justice, Jake returned to International Falls where he worked part-time with the local police department and sheriff department. In January 2004, Jake was hired by the Colorado Springs Police Department.  Jake joined his brother Luke and cousin Dan on the force.  Jake held specialized jobs with the Major Accident Unit, Crowd Control Riot Team, and the last 3.5 years attached to the SWAT team. Jake was involved in the active shooter situation at New Life Church in 2007 and the Planned Parenthood active shooter in 2015.  A great conversation with an amazing individual who is doing so much for the brave men and women in law enforcement. Throughout her career as a prosecutor, Val’s dynamic presentation style made her a frequently invited speaker for law enforcement and other professional and community groups. It also left her fielding many more speaking requests than she could possibly meet — prosecuting criminals is a full-time job.  And so, another adventure presented itself. In this episode, Patrick welcomes back Dr. John R. Beyer. This is John's third appearance on the show (Episode 54 & Episode 150). John spent years in law enforcement in Southern California as a street cop, a training officer and a member of the elite SWAT team. After leaving the force, he continued in public service entering the field of education. During his tenure, he served as classroom teacher, school administrator and district administrator. While in both worlds he earned a Doctorate in School Administration and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. During all those years, he never gave up the passion for writing – both fiction and nonfiction. He has been published in numerous magazines, newspapers and the like for decades on a variety of topics. He is the author of three highly praised internationally known novels – Hunted (2013), Soft Target (2014) and Operation Scorpion (2017). All deal with law enforcement (both local and federal level) intrigues – murder, mayhem, terrorism, and humor can be found in all three novels. His latest short stories for the past year can be found in Foliate Oak Literary Magazine (2016) and GNU Journal (2017). In this episode, Patrick welcomes Dylan Volk. After years of what his parents called “the diagnosis of the month club,” Dylan was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism at the age of eight. Life has been a minefield of obstacles for Dylan. When he was little, he struggled with learning the rules and following directions that did not make sense to him. As he got older, he was challenged, especially socially, by a world that seemed extremely confusing to him, with a disability that to most was invisible. Even today, Dylan works hard to figure out what he needs to do in order to get through each day as a 27-year-old adult with autism in our fast-paced and often unforgiving society. Dylan graduated from Sedgefield High School in 2010 and is currently pursuing his goal of making it in the entertainment industry. He has a YouTube channel under his stage name “Real Dielawn” where viewers are treated on a daily basis to a look inside his one-of-a-kind mind. Dylan has also been a regular on SiriusXM’s “Dirty Pop Live” hosted by Lance Bass, heard formerly on OutQ Channel 106 and RadioAndy Channel 102. He has hosted his own radio show, “Ridin with Dielawn” which aired Saturday nights in Portland, Maine on WLOB 100.5-FM and via his podcast. Dylan has been enjoying his experiences speaking about his life and the book he wrote with his father.  His presentations to thousands of people from coast to coast have been overwhelmingly well-received. He hopes his work helping his father write Chasing the Rabbit: A Dad’s Life Raising a Son on the Autism Spectrum and his new book, Bad Choices Make Good Stories: My Life with Autism, will help families as they navigate through the difficulties of living life on the spectrum.  He currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.
