It’s funny that I chose to listen to this podcast first because I live in Charlotte, NC although I wasn’t a resident at the time of this incident. As a person with a CJ degree, as well as interest in the law, and social justice I am continually riding both sides of the fence. Now more than ever. With just listening and not witnessing this event I would side with the victim. I get the initial response to follow and stop the vehicle. When the explanation was presented why judge the statement to be false? Is it not the duty to protect and serve? He was doing that for the store but not the person in front of him. Not a smart move on the part of the victim to get out and run around the car, but a total lack of proper response to a medical emergency on the part of police. What would the outcome be if he died there in custody? To not even check his wallet to verify his medical condition which is a simple and reasonable request, negates the further action of the police as unreasonable on their part. Now the other side of me realizes the split second decisions that they constantly have to make. I remember viewing my first shoot/don’t shoot video. I would have killed 5 innocent people. And every time I watched an episode of Cops and they had to chase down a suspect, I wanted to beat the shit out of them. We are all fallible human beings that carry innate perceptions and prejudices. I know nothing about police training. Are they given any type of medical training such as symptoms of x,y, or z? Should the officer display the same amount of respect they expect in return? Should they be cycled out of their normal routine every x number of days or months? I know from bartending at a resort in Florida I started to believe that people on vacation carried a license to be an asshole. A break from the norm can dispell pent up hostilities. Is there a type of group therapy offered to help officers vent or get a different perspective? Is there continuing education or training mandated? I am both saddened and concerned with the number of shootings, both at officers and by officers. I understand the fear on both sides and justified on both sides. I’m sick of guns and the general loss in the value of a human life. I even see it in myself sometimes and wonder what happened to my humanity? Over the past year or so Charlotte has had 2 officer involved shootings that required a trial or further investigation. In both cases I’m left to wonder did that person have to die? Could there be a better outcome or solution before the shoot to kill? I realize it is a split second in many of these cases, but is the mounting fear and distrust the mitigating factor behind the outcome? I want to be part of the solution in my community but where do I begin? I want the dialogue to begin and honestly air our grievances and take the step forward. Is more or better training required? Why don’t people just obey police commands? I fumed after this last incident when a person overheard a parent tell their child, Don’t ever trust the police. Or when a child tells there mom, You know what I wish? That I come home safe every day. It breaks my heart in either case. Sorry to dump all this on you. Figured you were a good start. You never should have liked my tweet when I questioned the credibility of Sheriff Arpaio and that he alone has proved that Obamas birth certificate was a forgery. Sadly, what once was a no nonsense crusader for law and order, has been swallowed up by his own publicity and belief that he’s above the law. In my opinion. Thanks!
