Michael began his law enforcement career in the United States Air Force as a Security Forces Officer in 1998. As a Security Forces Officer, Michael specialized in Law Enforcement, Global Force Protection, Anti-Terrorism, Nuclear Security, Foreign Air Field Assessments and Air Base Ground Defense.Michael served in a variety of assignments including: Flight Leader, Flight Commander, Senior Watch Officer, Chief of Command Post and Chief of Security Forces.Michael served all over the United States, Europe, the Middle East and South America. He was also a Security Forces Phoenix Raven with the unique identifier of #1173. Michael honorably separated from the Air Force as a Captain in 2004.Immediately after the Air Force, Michael was hired by the Walnut Creek Police Department where he served in a variety of assignments including: Patrol Officer, Driver Training Instructor (EVOC) Field Training Officer (FTO), SIU Detective, Undercover CA DOJ Narcotic Task Force Agent (Contra Costa County), Public Information Officer (PIO) and Patrol Sergeant.Michael was awarded the Walnut Creek PD Distinguished Service Medal in 2014 for his heroic and life-saving actions during a Fatal Officer Involved Shooting in 2012.Michael ultimately medically retired in 2018. He is now a Peer Volunteer at the West Coast Post Trauma Retreat (WCPR) and an Ambassador for Save A Warrior (SAW).Michael is a dedicated advocate for awareness, prevention, education, training on Post Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI) and First Responder Suicide Prevention. In 2007, Chris was recruited by the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO), a government agency that devised top-secret strategies for combating IED’s in Iraq in Afghanistan. As the lead tactical debriefing officer, he participated in over 110 combat missions and 91 captures of high-value targets (HVT’s) in Southern Iraq and performed more than 200 Battlefield Interrogations. Chris details his journey in his best-selling book Brooklyn to Baghdad an NYPD Intelligence Cop Fights Terror in Iraq. In his book, Chris applies his street-cop tactics and interrogation skills against a lethal insurgency that had infected Iraq. A group of retired Special Forces soldiers and law enforcement experts came together to form the counterinsurgency group codenamed “Phoenix Team.” Exposing the corruption of both the Iraqi and US governments, the team faced serious setbacks and challenges. Brooklyn to Baghdad shows the effectiveness of Phoenix Team, their ability to process forensic evidence and human intelligence gleaned through interrogations at the point of capture to provide direct targeting for follow-on missions. This memoir also illustrates the politics of Washington, DC, and the US Army in the war-fighting effort, which continually hampered complete success while simultaneously preserving career aspirations. For sixteen years, he was a prison guard in California's highest security prisons, serving meals to gang leaders, serial killers in lockdown cells, and patrolling exercise yards filled with violent felons while unarmed and outnumbered 1000-to-2. Unfortunately, sometimes we fall flat with those skills and it can cost a case, individual and agency reputations and often relationships with the community. My next guest is Brian Leslie. He is coercive interrogation expert and former Chief of Police. Brian is also the owner of Criminal Case Consultants Inc. According to Brian, identifying patterns of racial targeting, flawed investigations, excessive use of coercive interrogation techniques that force questionable confessions, coercive interview methods that use narrative integration to extract favorable witness statements, and faulty processes identifying suspects is unfortunately common in the law enforcement profession. This pattern demonstrates how police culture going unchecked can create dangerous factions in police departments that ultimately affect the community. Police officers have a tough job to do, but this should never excuse destructive or criminal behavior for any reason. Having an understanding and relationship with a community allows officers to put a face on those they police, not a mask. Many officers in police departments across America do take their oath seriously with pride and perform their sworn duties flawlessly. These officers work each day in their communities with no incidents and do make a difference. Most of these officers are seldomly in the media and maintain virtual anonymity but unfortunately wear a negative stain from those that fail their communities. A great and informative interview.
