Upon impact, Jason’s car burst into flames, trapping him inside. Through a series of miraculous and fateful circumstances, Jason survived the crash and ensuing physical and emotional catastrophe. He suffered severe burns to over 40% of his body which drastically altered his appearance. He has undergone more than 50 surgeries just to have the ability to accomplish simple daily tasks we often take for granted. Jason’s journey chronicles his fight for life, his triumph over tragedy and the inspiration that enables him to continue to overcome unimaginable adversity. His personal narrative exemplifies that the power of the human spirit can never be underestimated or extinguished. His story is one of life, rebirth, and transformation. Patrick Fitzgibbons is a retired Police Commander and former Army Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. He is now a Program Lead for FHE Health in their Shatterproof Program for First Responders located in Deerfield Beach, Florida. He is passionate about helping first responders who are struggling, and he also sought treatment for his struggles. He holds advanced degrees in organizational leadership and business, and is currently studying to become a licensed mental health clinician in the State of Florida. Jason Schechterle is a former Phoenix Police Officer whose lifelong dream of service was tested by a life-altering tragedy. After four years in the Air Force, Jason joined the Phoenix PD, but just 14 months into his career, a taxi crashed into his patrol car at over 100 mph on March 26, 2001, engulfing it in flames. Surviving severe burns to over 40% of his body, he endured over 50 surgeries. His story of resilience is captured in his 2014 book, Burning Shield: The Jason Schechterle Story, an Arizona Republic "Pick of the Month." Jason’s journey reflects an unyielding human spirit, triumph over adversity, and a fight against preventable law enforcement deaths linked to Ford Crown Victoria fires.
